Service Description

The Third Class FAA Medical Certificate is required for private pilots, student pilots, recreational pilots, and certain instructors not acting as pilot-in-command for hire. It is the most common and least restrictive medical certification for general aviation flying. What to Expect During the Exam: This exam includes a review of your health history, a basic physical examination, and tests for vision and hearing. Your physician will check your heart and lungs, neurological status, and general physical condition. You’ll also undergo vision screening for distance and near acuity, color vision, and peripheral vision. Hearing is tested via conversational voice. EKGs are not required for Third Class certification. Certificate Duration and Limitations: For pilots under age 40, Third Class privileges are valid for 60 months (5 years). For those 40 and older, the privileges are valid for 24 months (2 years). Third Class certification does not permit commercial flying or airline transport operations. It ensures pilots are medically fit to operate safely in a non-commercial environment. Conditions like insulin-dependent diabetes, epilepsy, or certain mental health diagnoses may require FAA special issuance or further review. This certificate is ideal for those flying for recreation, instruction, or as part of their training journey toward higher certifications.
